COLEY CHURCH WILDLIFE GROUP
The graveyard wildlife project has continued to be worked on and a path has been laid and marked with metal edging to show visitors where it is now safe to walk. Marjorie Middleton has visited and made some useful suggestions.
Marjorie is the daughter of Norman and Molly Lister so grew up as a member of St John's congregation. She is a member of the St Matthew 's Churchyard, Lightcliffe, a well-established experienced and successful conservation group. Marjorie is a wildlife specialist who produces their regular wildlife surveys which can be viewed at this link.
Marjorie was impressed and very complimentary about the progress we have made in such a short time. She especially liked the wildlife refuges around the walls, the extensive areas of cover for birds and other creatures to nest and hide, the planted graves, our large bulb planting and the bug hotel. She thought the Zone Plan was working well.
Marjorie gave some
good advice,
including
-
Leave the flowering ivy to grow, it's good source of pollen and nectar through autumn
-
Allow ivy to grow back up the trees
-
Get some autumn flowering plants next year
-
Allow a few areas of grass to grow long and go to seed
-
Get in touch with local support and resource organisations -Majorie provided contact details
Overall it was a very worthwhile morning for us and great to get such positive feedback from one of our local experts - very motivational!
Prayer for the Churchyard Garden
May your feet tread lightly
within this precious garden,
and imprints left behind
be simply where you paused
to sow a seed of love,
where now a flower blooms.
Amen
